The Pyramids of Giza
There are three Pyramids at Giza, each of which at sometime had a mortuary temple attached to it. The great pyramid for 4000 years stood as the tallest man made structure in the world before the age of sky scrapers. The Great Pyramid was constructed with 2,300,000 limestone blocks each weighing around 2.5 tons, rising at an angle of 51052’ to a height of 481 feet form a base length of 755 feet.
There is a school of thought that the Pyramids were built by slaves but the other school of historians feel that during the annual flood of the Nile for 3 months of the year when farming was not possible leading to unemployment, King Khufu provided 100, 000 people work by building the pyramid providing them with good food and clothing for their labour. This act has him remembered in many folk tales.
It is believed that the coming together of so many people to work for a common cause led to the unification of the people of Egypt at that time forging a national identity in their hearts.
The Guardian Sphinx
The Sphinx at Giza has been an iconic symbol of Egypt for thousands of years. With the head of a king, the body of a lion and the wings of a bird, carved out of the bedrock of the Giza plateau, this mystifying marvel has been a symbol of wisdom and strength.
The dimensions of the sphinx are awe inspiring with the body measuring 200 feet and a height of 65 feet. The sphinx has a face 30 feet long, 13 feet wide with eyes 6 feet high. Just the length of the paws is 50 feet. Sadly today the figure is eroding fast due to wind, and pollution from nearby Cairo.

Archaeologists discovered two colourful tombs in the ancient necropolis of Saqqara, south of Cairo. The tombs are believed to be around 4,300 years old.

The tombs carved into rocks and dating from the 6th Dynasty (2,374-2,191 BC) were found west of the Step Pyramid of Djoser in the Giza area.

According to Zahi Hawass head of Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities, the tombs belong to Shendwa, a top government official and head of the royal scribes, and his son, Khonsu, who inherited the same titles as his father.

Shendwa’s tomb has a beautiful false door depicting him sitting in front of a table of sacrifices, signifying that he held important positions during that period.

The burial shaft of the tomb was located directly beneath the false door, and Shendwa’s wooden coffin was buried in a 20 meter-deep well that had prevented thieves getting in; the wooden sarcophagus had disintegrated due to humidity and erosion. Beside the sarcophagus, excavators found limestone jars, including five offering vessels carved in the shape of a duck.

A painted relief and a 30 cm tall obelisk made of limestone symbolizing the worship of the Sun God Re were found inside the burial shaft.

The tomb of Khonsu contained a sacrifice table and stone lintel engraved with 6th Dynasty symbols.

The Egyptian team has been excavating at the site since 1986.
